Awakening Your Emotional Intelligence

Much has been written about Emotional Intelligence, otherwise known as EQ. It is said to be the most important aspect of Leadership and a critical success factor in life. We agree and fundamentally believe that EQ is the bedrock of happiness and wellness.

Despite its importance, EQ is generally misunderstood and overlooked, with its cousin IQ taking centre stage and being over-used to assess and promote learning and ability. Emotional intelligence is not one thing and not so easy to assess; rather it is a rich combination of attributes such as self-awareness, openness, empathy and presence – a very different kind of wisdom…

Emotional intelligence has been defined as:

  • Knowing and managing your emotions
  • Motivating yourself
  • Recognising and understanding other people’s emotions
  • Managing relationships

Now consider these wise quotes which support and illustrate this kind of wisdom:

He who overcomes others is strong; he who overcomes himself is powerful” – Lao-Tse

People only have problems because they are out of rapport with their unconscious minds” – Milton Erickson
O, wad some Power the giftie gie us… To see oursels as others see us!” – Robert Burns
The strongest force in the human personality is the need to remain consistent with how we define ourselves” – Tony Robbins
Life ultimately means taking the responsibility” – Viktor Frankl
Everybody is a genius. But if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree it will live its whole life believing that it is stupid” – Albert Einstein

These truisms are rather like the presuppositions of NLP or Don Miguel Ruiz’s ‘Four Agreements’ – really simple, yet powerful, and seemingly difficult to connect with and embrace.

These shadow aspects of ourselves and others are what makes managing relationships appear so difficult. Through the filters of our own egoic model of the world, we make inaccurate judgements and assumptions which antagonise relationships and upset our own emotional state.

We all have amazing and unique gifts and potential. We also have our unique challenges and shadow side which can so often sabotage and blind us from our potential. Our gifts and our shadow side are unequivocally linked – two sides of the same coin.

Contact us if you would like to discover your potential, awaken your emotional intelligence and master the egoic barriers that can sabotage your relationships, your happiness and wellbeing.
